RELATED: D&D Party’s Rendition of Wonderwall Ended an In-Game Ice AgeĪnother thing to consider is how an Arcane Trickster can utilize their dangerous spell attacks with the sneak attack bonus. They can also allow the Rogue to do a little damage when necessary. Taking on cantrips like Minor Illusion, Booming Blade, Toll the Dead and Message are all useful in creating diversions, keeping in contact when working separate from the rest of the party. Maybe they need to disguise themselves to avoid drawing unnecessary attention or recognition. Perhaps they're hoping to cause illusory distractions to trick enemies, so the party can make a quick getaway. After all, many spent their pre-adventuring lives finding the sneakiest ways to carry out the important tasks that kept them alive. Illusion magic tends to be useful for many Arcane Tricksters. When choosing spells, consider what the Rogue's role is in the party. Finally, since Arcane Tricksters have limited spell capacity, Magic Initiate is helpful, as it allows them to choose a spell class and one first-level spell from that category. That also means that, if a player has disadvantage on a roll, they can roll a third die and use that if it's higher than the lower roll. Lucky is also an all around useful feat for Rogues in general, as it allows the player to spend a Luck point to roll another d20 on an attack roll, saving throw or ability check, then choose which one they want to use. War Caster also grants advantage on concentration checks to ensure those powerful spells they're throwing around don't get knocked out of play when they take damage. While there are rules to casting multiple spells in combat, having access to both a cantrip and a higher level spell in one go is useful. Spellcasting opportunities tend to be limited in combat, so this is a helpful feat. War Caster is useful because it allows an Arcane Trickster to basically dual-wield spells the way regular Rogues can dual-wield weapons. Arcane Tricksters have access feats that grant advantages in spellcasting, stealth and resilience, all of which come in handy during complicated battles. Strength is the perfect dump stat, as Rogues rarely need to use it. Finally, a little Charisma never hurts for a Rogue, especially one looking to talk their way out of trouble. Constitution is also necessary, as it not only determines how much the character's body can handle, it also contributes to their hit point pool. While not as important as Dexterity or Intelligence, Wisdom is useful for checking for traps. Boosting those two attributes as soon as possible is essential, so using the highest point rolls or point buy to bolster DEX and INT will get this Rogue off to a great start. Because Rogues and Thieves tend to be strategisers, it doesn't hurt to give them some smarts anyway, but for the Arcane Trickster Rogue, Intelligence will determine their spellcasting modifier and Spell DC, so the higher their INT is, the better their chances of hitting targets with spells.
